Tamagotchi 4U is the first Japanese release of the Tamagotchi series to feature NFC. Besides the obvious reference to the English phrase, "for you", 4U also stands for "Utility, United, Unique, Universal." It launched on September 27, 2014. Like the Western-exclusive Tamagotchi Friends, this edition drops the infrared communication in favor of NFC technology. There were four shell designs to be available at launch, all featuring a clear front for custom faceplates, a gold border, and a pearlescent colored back. Two additional anniversary designs were released. Like the TamaTown Tama-Go, the 4U has the option of swappable faceplates.
