Shortly after the release of the anniversary Chibi Tamagotchi, Bandai released a set of Japan-exclusive Gen 1 shells that matched the original first six shells released in 1996. Other countries later received a wave of eight Gen 1 Tamagotchi units featuring four classic shells and four all-new designs. Since then, Bandai has regularly released new waves of both Gen 1 and Gen 2 under the branding “Original Tamagotchi”, with more recent releases focusing on all-new designs not seen in the original late-90s models. They have also issued annual San Diego Comic Con exclusives and an Amazon-exclusive special celebration model every spring. In 2024, Bandai added new shells for the Tamagotchi Angel under the name “Original Tamagotchi Gen 3.”

China has received several Gen 1 shells that are not sold anywhere else in the world, and those models are featured together in their own section.

Earlier releases featured the classic 90s Tamagotchi branding, but a new typeface was introduced in 2023. All shells released since then have featured the new branding, and several older shells were re-released with the new font.
